da betobet: Mirror Football journalist John Cross has suggested Arsenal won’t sell Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City, largely because they’ll unlikely complete a transfer deal for Monaco attacker Thomas Lemar before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
What’s the word?
Alexis Sanchez’s ongoing transfer saga has inevitably seeped into the final day of the summer window, giving Arsenal a huge decision to make with their talismanic attacker’s contract due to expire at the end of next season. We already know Manchester City have tabled a second bid for the Chile international and that Arsenal have launched a club-record £92million offer for Monaco sensation Thomas Lemar – the logical assumption being that Lemar, a fellow winger-forward type, is being targeted as Sanchez’s direct replacement. Ruining all the Deadline Day fun and intrigue, however, John Cross – Mirror Football’s main man on all matters Arsenal – claims the Gunners are now adamant Sanchez won’t be sold, partly because a deal for Lemar would be ‘nigh on impossible’.
Good news or bad news for Arsenal?
While most Arsenal fans would prefer to keep Sanchez for another year than spend £92million on a replacement who may or may not be good enough, the potential implications could be huge for the Gunners over the coming months. Sanchez’s uncertain future has lingered over the club like a dark cloud since the end of last season and will likely continue to do so until at least January when Arsenal are almost certain to face offers from their Premier League rivals once again.
Sanchez didn’t exactly look settled when he made his first appearance of the season against Liverpool last weekend and although he’s never the type to shy away from a football match, we don’t know what his mindset is like at this moment in time – especially now knowing that City have tried and allegedly failed in two bids for him. Furthermore, the strong possibility now is that Arsenal will end up losing their top talent for free next summer, while missing out on one of the most exciting youngsters in European football last season.
Whereas a swoop for Lemar would have at least given Arsenal fans a sense of rejuvenation and rebuilding going into their next batch of Premier League fixtures, neither the Frenchman nor Sanchez moving essentially leaves them in the same mess they’re stuck in right now.
