Roy Hodgson’s dream move to Liverpool has now turned into a nightmare for the former Fulham manager. After two glorious seasons at Fulham which saw them first qualify for the Europa League and then reach final of the same competition. After two weeks of turmoil that saw a home defeat to Blackpool and the cherished institution being dragged through the High Court, defeat to Everton John W. Henry has seen first hand that his new acquisition are without doubt in crisis.
Without doubt the clubs previous owners have put the club in a position where this could happen. Constant fall outs over transfer policy distracted ex boss Benitez, and a popular figure on the Kop quit for Inter Milan.
The appointment of Hodgson wasn’t met with glee but it was seen as a wise appointment – that would stabilise the club until new owners were found and the club could re assess its situation. However, it has been anything but a stabilising mission by Hodgson. After a positive start with Torres being persuaded to stay and Gerrard signing a new contract – adding to that the acquisition of Joe Cole, Hodgson had started well. However it has all gone wrong for the Surrey born manager.
Hodgson has been naïve in his team selection, starting at the defeat to Manchester City in August. He played 442 against arguably the best midfield in the Premier League. City dominated the game from start to finish and it was a sign of things to come. Liverpool has been playing with no spark, no imagination and no creativity. Steven Gerrard stands a lonely figure in his talent and Fernando Torres’ form is unexplainable. Torres has showed sparks this season – especially in the second half against Manchester United but in the main he has looked a shadow of former glories.
The problem could be Hodgson. Have the squad the confidence that Hodgson is the man to reignite their season? When teams are in the position Liverpool find them selves in it is obvious the ones who are playing for their manager and his beliefs and the ones that have lost belief in his abilities. Liverpool fans can be forgiven for turning on their manager so early. He has shown nothing so far of a man that can turn this start around. It is not an attack on Hodgson but his lack of creation.
What seems to be unravelling is that Hodgson does not have the skills required to manage a club of Liverpool’s stature. Of course players must take responsibility for their failings this season. However, the responsibility of the manager is to keep the group together with a clear mission. What are Liverpool’s targets? What are Hodgson’s? Without a doubt the two are miles apart, showing that the Englishman is to some degree out of his depth. The signing of Paul Konchesky screams out that Hodgson was sticking to what he knew. At Fulham, with the greatest respect, he over achieved with a team he managed to inspire. However it takes a special manager to inspire some of Europe’s top players.
It is a shame that Hodgson’s dream move has turned out so sour. John W. Henry at the Boston Red Socks is no stranger to changing managers to achieve success. If results do not improve will he trust Hodgson with transfer funds in January? Sadly it seems not.
