da blaze casino: I know it’s difficult to judge where a team will finish in the Premier League, especially only after a couple of games have been played, but I can almost guarantee you that Tottenham Hotspur will not finish in the top four this season.
da dobrowin: Two seasons have passed since Tottenham last finished in the top four, and even then they didn’t get to play Champions League football due to the fact Chelsea had won that years’ competition and finished outside the top four.
Since 2012, the Premier League landscape has changed and a prime indication of how it has changed is the distance between the top four and the rest of the pack. The gap was seven points (fourth place Arsenal – 79pts, fith place Everton – 72pts) which is huge in the Premier League. Tottenham finished on 69pts and in sixth, making the gap between them and the promised land even bigger.
A way to improve on this finish would be to buy the necessary players in the transfer window to improve your squad. This summer, new Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino signed six players, with Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Eric Dier, DeAndre Yedlin, Federico Fazio, and Benjamin Stambouli all arriving in north London. As you can see from the list of names mentioned, most of them are defenders and there is not a single striker in the bunch, a position that I think Spurs need to address.
A lot of people would argue the striker position was an area Tottenham definitely needed to improve on this past summer. The signing of Roberto Soldado from Valencia for £26m was a huge disappointment as he only managed to score six goals from 28 Premier League appearances last season.
Some may say Emmanuel Adebayor did well for Spurs scoring 11 goals from 21 Premier League appearances last year and that he can be relied upon to get the goals Spurs need for a fourth place finish, but he is starting to reach the age where most strikers start to decrease in production. Whilst Harry Kane is showing promise, he is still young and needs time to develop his game further.
Ex-Spurs manager Tim Sherwood echoed those thoughts in a recent interview: “They need some cover there at centre-half just in case Younes (Kaboul) gets injured and I would say they’re probably one short of a striker to really challenge for top four.”
The class of players bought into Tottenham this transfer window compared to that of players bought into Manchester United is completely different. United have gone out and bought in some of the best players in the world in the shape Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao. This is a reason why I think Manchester United will bounce back and finish in the top four compared to Spurs, who I don’t think will.
With the emergence of Liverpool as serious title contenders last season, it seems another spot will most likely permanently filled for the time being, making it even harder for teams like Spurs to make it their own any time soon.
