da fezbet: According to an article in the Daily Mail analysing the futures of a number of England players, reported West Ham United target Daniel Sturridge has been valued at £40m by Liverpool if he is to leave Anfield this summer.
da realsbet: The story says that the striker could be on his way out of Anfield before the start of next season with manager Jurgen Klopp undecided on whether he should stay after failing to win a regular spot in the starting line-up over the course of the last two seasons.
Roberto Firmino was just one of the players that was preferred in the centre-forward role last term as Sturridge took his spot on the substitutes’ bench, and the 27-year-old ended the campaign with just seven goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, with just three of those coming in the Premier League.
Irons manager Slaven Bilic is keen to sign two strikers this summer and the Daily Mail suggests the Croatian would face competition from Paris Saint-Germain if he decided to push ahead with a move for the England striker, but he would be better off turning his attentions elsewhere.
Here are three reasons West Ham should steer clear of a £40m deal for Sturridge…
Cost
While West Ham may well break they transfer record this summer as they look to push on up the Premier League table and as fees continue to increase, it would be a huge ask to see them pay almost double the club-record £20.5m fee they got Andre Ayew for from Swansea City last year.
With Sturridge’s wages on top, it would be a huge deal for the Irons and a big risk financially considering the number of appearances the 27-year-old has made in recent seasons.
Added to that is the fact that the club – along with many others in the top flight – could easily be involved in a relegation scrap next term with little to choose between a number of teams in the final Premier League table last season.
Injuries
One of the reasons Sturridge has failed to break into the Liverpool side on a regular basis over the course of the last three seasons is because of a number of injury problems.
The 27-year-old has featured in just 46 Premier League matches since the 2013/14 campaign and that could put Slaven Bilic off seeing as he is looking for a striker that will be more reliable and have less fitness issues than Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho.
While Sturridge has shown what a good finisher he can be, paying £40m for a player that suffers as many niggles as he does would be a risk that isn’t worth taking.
Better value elsewhere
While Liverpool want £40m for Sturridge, West Ham certainly look like they could get better value elsewhere with some of the attacking players they have already been linked with this summer.
Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho is said to be available for £25m and has shown that he is a clinical finisher at this level despite being just 20 years of age, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud may only cost £20m if he is allowed to leave the Gunners in the coming weeks.
