da dobrowin: According to ESPN, Arsenal are reportedly looking to sign Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico this summer, whilst Real Madrid are also courting a player who has starred in the Champions League for the Dutch side this season.
What’s the word, then?
Well, Los Blancos and the Gunners, along with Atletico Madrid, are all keen on securing the services of Tagliafico.
Real Madrid recently had a first-hand view of the Argentine’s ability in the Champions League last 16 tie, in which the 26-year-old had a goal ruled out by VAR – it would’ve been his sixth goal of the season, but his five strikes and three assists are still impressive.
The aforementioned report states that Tagliafico may be keen to follow teammate Frenkie de Jong in leaving the club for pastures new, whilst Matthijs de Ligt could also leave amid interest from some of the world’s leading teams.
A solution to Arsenal’s left-back problems
Unai Emery currently has two options on the left-hand side of defence, but both have their flaws.
Nacho Monreal is getting on a bit, having just enjoyed his 33rd birthday towards the end of February. The Spaniard has also made just 13 Premier League starts this season, so he isn’t fancied as the outright first choice by Emery, whilst Sead Kolasinac has made 17.
However, the Bosnian is quite suspect defensively, so his position in the team still isn’t completely nailed down if an opportunity to sign a left-back in the market arises.
Tagliafico is a fiery South American full-back who plays with real aggression and energy, whilst his athleticism seems like it would suit Emery’s wing-back system perfectly should he arrive at the Emirates.
Evidently, they face serious competition for his signature from some of Europe’s top clubs, but if they can lure the Ajax star to north London a problem position would be solved.
