da realbet: According to Turkish-Football, West Bromwich Albion are in the race for Mainz 05 wonderkid Erkan Eyibil. By signing him, it could finally represent an Izzy Brown replacement at the Hawthorns.
What’s the word?
Eyibil is yet to play for the Mainz first team but has a phenomenal record for the club’s youth sides, scoring 27 goals in 47 matches for their U17s in prior campaigns.
This term, he’s scored 15 in 19 for Mainz U19s, which for a player who plays as a number ten is a phenomenal record.
As a result, he’s now attracting the interest of a variety of clubs, per Turkish-Football. One of those teams are West Brom who could be competing alongside Midlands rivals Aston Villa for the player’s signature.
The 17-year-old, who can represent either Turkey or Germany at international level, only has a year left on his contract which means Mainz could be looking to cash in.
Other English clubs in West Ham and Newcastle have also been scouting Eyibil, according to the report.
Izzy Brown replacement?
West Brom have seen plenty of their top academy stars leave down the years and Brown represents one of the biggest prospects to have departed the Hawthorns.
He went to Chelsea in 2013 whilst another top talent in Tyler Roberts left only last year. There’s been plenty of frustration surrounding Albion’s academy but Eyibil could help make up for some of the young players who have left.
The creative midfielder looks an exceptional talent and with the ability to play in the same position as Brown has featured in throughout the years, he could be the most natural replacement they’ve had since.
Rekeem Harper could potentially be off considering his contract expires at the end of the season which means the Baggies may be forced to see another young individual flee the club.
However, Eyibil could help turn the tide. If West Brom can attract an exceptional young player like him then it could be game-changing for the academy.
