Now, it seems that that the Whites are also pursuing the 23-year-old along with the East Midlands club.
Saints should bide their time
It certainly hasn’t gone to plan for Adams since he signed for £15m in the summer. He received ridicule when he said in one of his first interviews with the club that the Saints have a squad that is capable of winning the Premier League, and on the pitch he has done anything but prove his worth.
In 15 appearances in all competitions, he has failed to score, and has a WhoScored average rating of just 6.2.
It is therefore understandable that there is speculation linking him with a move away from St. Mary’s Stadium, but Ralph Hasenhuttl and co should be wary of cutting ties with him too quickly. After all, he has shown his goalscoring prowess in the past. Last season in the Championship, he scored 22 goals and provided five assists in a team that finished 17th in the table, which is certainly not to be sniffed at.
Calling all Premier League experts: Who do these unique statistics belong to? Find out below….
Yes, it hasn’t gone the way that both the player and the south coast side would have liked, and there may be some concerns that the longer they wait, the more his market value will drop, but Southampton should stick with their summer acquisition.
This, after all, is just his first season in the top flight, and he has made just six starts to date. It doesn’t help that he is playing in a side who are languishing at the wrong end of the table.
The confidence of the whole side is likely to be just as low as his own right now. He cannot be solely blamed for his failures in front of goal.
He can’t afford to take all the time in the world to find his feet, but it’s far too soon to write him off.
Give him time, and he may well just become the player they thought they were signing when they parted with that considerable sum in the summer.
In other news, Southampton are surely regretting the sale of this man.
