da mrbet: According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have turned down a loan bid from AS Roma for Xherdan Shaqiri.
What’s the story?
da betobet: The Switzerland international has struggled with injuries so far this season, but even when he has been fit, he has started just three games in all competitions.
The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?
With Nicolo Zaniolo now out injured, the Giallorossi are looking for a replacement, and they have pinpointed the former Stoke man. They are even said to have made an offer to take him on a temporary basis. The Anfield outfit, though, rejected the approach, with Romano adding there is “no chance” of the move happening.
One of the few serial winners
Shaqiri is not, and is unlikely to ever become, one of the first names on the team sheet for Jurgen Klopp. That says more about the ability of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane rather than himself, but if he wants regular first-team football in the long term then he must depart Anfield.
With just a few months remaining this season, though, his experience could be absolutely vital. It may be surprising to some that the 28-year-old is the most decorated player in this Liverpool squad. He has five league titles, four domestic cups and two Champions League medals in his trophy cabinet. With the likes of Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and FC Basel, he has seen and done it all.
This Liverpool team is not exactly devoid of a winning mentality – they conquered all of Europe last term, after all – but this has the potential to be a huge season. With three competitions still very much within reach, and two already in the bag, it could end up being one of, if not the most successful season in the club’s history. For Klopp to be able to pull such triumph off, though, he will need all hands on deck. Shaqiri has shown that he has still has something to offer on the pitch too rather than just around the club, as he showed against Everton by scoring on his first Premier League start of the campaign.
A loan would make no sense, especially given what could be achieved this term. In the summer, it may be a different story, but for now, Liverpool would be mad to let him depart.
