da premier bet: West Ham United are preparing a second bid for World Cup finalist Domagoj Vida, after Besiktas rejected a £26.7m offer from Monaco for the defender, according to Fanatik, via the Daily Express.
What’s the story, then?
da dobrowin: The report claims that Manuel Pellegrini has already seen a swoop worth £22m rejected and that the Turkish outfit have since turned down £26.7m from the Ligue 1 outfit for Vida.
It says that has not put the Hammers off though and they plan to re-enter discussions for the player to further bolster their defence irrespective of the ever-increasing price.
The report also names a number of other clubs who have held an interest in the player, including Liverpool, Everton, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.
Vida had a good World Cup but is not an elite player
Vida, alongside Dejan Lovren, marshalled a Croatia defence that navigated the weaker side of the World Cup draw to reach the final but that does not make either man an elite central defender.
The perils of judging a player on the back of the World Cup are well-known, but Vida is already 29 years of age and has never set the world alight.
The joy Raheem Sterling got in the opening half of the World Cup semi-final shows that the Croatian really doesn’t have the pace to handle the Premier League and with the bidding getting towards £30m, Pellegrini should leave this one alone.
When Winston Reid returns from injury, the Hammers will have a player of the same quality available.
